I can see where you are coming from, it's quite iffy when the story keeps linking back to the game tasks Aoi set out for him. However, from what I see, Tomozaki don't just see the game tasks as simple missions to clear, but as something he believe will help develop himself IRL (something that he really wants to do).

At first he was really hesitant to go through with the confession tasks and he wasn't going to do it just for the sake of it. But afterwards he came to understand he liked Fuuka and Mimimi, and that he had to choose one, so he 'completed the task' as a way to respond to his true feelings.

I just couldn't see that as a step forward. First off, all of his grows were completed by trying to imitate someone and fulfil the mission. It's half through his will and half to fulfil the mission even in the last episode he was still in his player mode even they're on the date when he realizes he completed the mission, he immediately informs Aoi. That was uncomfortable af seeing him still treated his first date as part of the game and prioritize inform Aoi. In fact, I felt like his feeling to Fuka might not even be genuine. The reason he chose Fuka might even be because Aoi reduced his choice to 2 for him and he had to choose either one.

yeah I was pissed when he was texting Aoi during the date. But I'd say there's still a very high percentage its genuine, if you stay up to 4am to read a girl's favourite book then then's gonna be some feelings involved. And if it wasn't genuine when he got shot down he would have just turned to Mimimi instead.

I would stay up at 4 AM reading someone's works just because I respect their work without any romantic feeling involve. And many in the world do that too tho.

But in this case he chose to do it to understand Fuka better, to know her thought process. He's invested in Fuka enough to do this, to actually give his honest feedback for all her drafts. I don't know about you, but all the meetings in the library to read her works and give her feedback looked genuine - which was why the part about him texting Aoi during the date made me go "wtf". The build up to their relationship was great, note that it already began in the first season, which got the ship sailing. When he read between the lines and knew Fuka initially rejected him, he was hurt. It wasn't like, "ah shucks, I can't complete my task going this route, let's just clear this task some other way instead". He was really dejected by it.

As we all agreed, dude is suck, texting and prioritizing his mission with another girl over his first date 💀
